TECHNICAL GUIDE - PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING

Photographic Printing
Peak have been producing top quality photographic prints for photographers for the past 22 years. We have skilled staff and the finest equipment to help achieve the very best results. Now, using the latest photo-digital printers from Fuji and Durst we can produce professional colour prints faster, at cost effective prices.

Negatives and transparencies are digitally scanned and printed on to continuous tone photographic paper using RGB lasers. This produces a higher quality print fully optimised for colour and density. Contrast is better controlled with greater detail in the shadow and highlight areas, especially important when printing from transparencies.
Check it out - you'll see the difference!

We can work from any size original from 35mm to 5x4, negative or transparency, in colour or black & white. Prints can be produced on gloss or satin matt surface paper.

Cropping
Most of our customers appreciate that a rectangular print ordered from a square original will produce a print with either borders or severe cropping of the image. It is important to remember however that even rectangular negatives, specifically 35mm will produce prints with substantial cropping when printed to some industry standard sizes such as 5x4 and 10x8. Please bear this in mind when ordering. The following guide will be of help.

If you require us to produce a print with cropping, please indicate which part of the image is to be cropped.

Colour Balance
Colour is a subjective medium and we liase closely with our regular customers to ensure that we meet their preferences. Some customers like warm prints, others prefer their prints to be cool. If you have a preference please indicate on your order. In the absence of specific instructions we aim to produce neutral prints with natural colours.

Colour Matching
Due to the limitations of the dyes used in the photographic process, it is impossible to guarantee an exact colour match when comparing photographic prints to originals, and samples. Some man made fibres which reflect infra-red light are notoriously difficult to reproduce and a common problem is the green suit which appears brown on the print. Nothing can be done photographically with this type of problem and the only solution is to scan the negative and edit colours via Photoshop.

Even so, samples should always be provided where possible to ensure close matching. In the absence of specific instructions a judgement will be made on the overall colour balance of the subject.

Photographic Prints from Negatives

We offer three different printing services from negatives. Standard fixed format prints, selective prints and our premier service, custom made prints.  Please note that Black & White prints are produced digitally on colour paper.

Depending on the required service all negatives entering the laboratory are digitally scanned using Fuji or Flextite high resolution scanners. The print information is then passed over our network to either Fuji or Durst Photo-Digital printers. Unlike mail order d&p services and high street minilabs each print is individually assessed, graded and reprinted if necessary.

35mm Process & Print
Standard Service

Your film is processed and borderless colour corrected fixed format prints are produced from each good negative on gloss surface paper. This service uses digital scanning technology to provide a fast, top quality, process and print service at a competitive price. Our standard service is ideal for general photography such as family, holiday photos and landscapes.

Normal in lab time is 2 days. Free index print with this service.

35mm & 120 Process & Print
Professional Service

Your film is processed and borderless, colour corrected machine prints on satin matt or gloss surface paper are then produced from each correctly exposed negative. Each print is then carefully assessed for density and colour balance and reprinted if necessary.

The prints produced are from substantially the whole of the negative. A certain amount of cropping is unavoidable and it's important to choose a print size that matches the negative format to minimise this (see notes on cropping).

Our professional process & print service is the most cost effective way of obtaining high quality, colour corrected prints at the time of film processing. The film is processed and, because this is a fixed price service with no refunds for unexposed negatives, the prints are heavily discounted. Multiple rolls of film and extra prints produced at the same time offer even better value for money.

Our professional service is ideal for weddings, studio portraiture, glamour photography or where flesh tones and colour consistency are paramount. This service is specifically recommended for all professional and specialist C41 process films. Normal in lab time is 2 days. Free index print with this service.

Fixed Format Colour Reprints
Borderless, colour corrected fixed format prints on gloss or satin matt surface paper from 35mm and 120 negatives. Machine prints are the most economical way to produce fixed size prints up to 30 x 20 inches. Each negative is video analysed for optimum density and colour balance and each print produced is then checked by skilled grading staff and re-printed if necessary before being passed.

The prints produced are from substantially the whole of the negative. A certain amount of cropping is unavoidable and it is important to choose a print size that matches the negative format to minimise this (see notes on cropping).

Selective Colour Prints
Borderless, colour corrected machine prints selectively enlarged to standard machine print sizes. Available on lustre or gloss surface paper from 35mm and 120 negatives. Each print is carefully assessed for density and colour balance and reprinted if necessary.

This service overcomes one of the main limitations of standard machine prints and bridges the gap between machine and hand made prints. Only a limited range of magnification is available and local density corrections are not possible with this service.

Please be sure to provide a sketch or sample print to indicate cropping required.

Custom Colour Prints from Negatives
Custom colour prints are selectively enlarged by skilled operators to your specific instructions, producing prints of outstanding quality. Because prints are produced individually, you have complete control over image size, composition and colour balance.

To take the fullest advantage of our premier service you should ideally provide a sketch or small print showing the work you require. If colour accuracy is important you must provide a guide or sample print.

Photographic Prints from Transparencies

Colour prints from transparencies have up to now been produced in one of two ways. The traditional way is to make a special negative, termed an internegative, from the transparency and then print the internegative on conventional colour paper. The second method is to produce colour prints direct from transparencies using special paper and the R3 process. The R3 process eliminated the need for an internegative to be made.

There were pros and cons using either of these techniques. Internegatives handled flesh tones well and offered better control over contrast. The down side was the extra time incurred and cost. R3 reversal prints were inexpensive and produce results quicker, however the process did not handle high contract subjects well.

Our new photo-digital printers overcome all of the problems illustrated above and most prints up to 40" x 30" are now made using our digital printers.  In this process your transparency is scanned at high resolution and then written to conventional colour paper using RGB lasers. The results are superb.
